Lisa

Nell and Justine climbed into the back while Lisa remained behind the wheel. Howard climbed up front into the passenger seat, where he barely had enough room to curl up, his front paws dangling off the edge of the seat.

Justine unfolded the map in her lap and guided Lisa along backroads without incident for some time, staying relatively close to the interstate so that they might hop back on when it was clear enough.

After a short while in the car, Nell grew rather silent, and upon peering into the rearview mirror Lisa found her friend fast asleep. Justine held onto Nell’s hand, her ability to ‘clear minds’ active even unconscious as she was. Justine continued to give Lisa directions, her voice little more than a whisper to keep from waking her daughter.

Driving through suburbs and retail spaces, there appeared intermittent signs of destruction everywhere they went. No single place was entirely safe, or unscathed, and it hadn’t even been a full day since the start of it all.

“What happens if we get there,” Lisa said softly, glancing through the rearview at Nell’s lolled head in the backseat, “and Nathan isn’t there anymore?”

“You mean if he’s evacuated?” Justine said. “Then I suppose we’re out of luck.”

Lisa hoped Justine was wrong, naturally. Surely not everyone’s first instinct was to flee their homes. If that had been the case, the interstate wouldn’t be viable at all. She wondered what the rest of the world was making of all this, what the news was broadcasting. Would they happen across military response eventually? Could human weaponry even put a dent in an invasion like this? Lisa thought of the entity above their heads—enormous, dangling over the earth like a mobile over a crib—and wondered what could ever stop something like that.

She glanced into the rearview again. She regarded her best friend, mouth hanging open in her sleep. Whatever Nell’s reasons, Lisa thought she was probably right about all this. About Hux.

He could stop it. He could definitely stop it.

As if reading Lisa’s mind, Justine said suddenly, “Do you think her plan will work?”

Lisa chewed on the thought for a bit.

“If she thinks it’ll work, then… yeah, I think it’ll work.”

She briefly glanced into the rearview, meeting Justine’s gaze, then nervously focused on the road once more. The truth was that Lisa had her doubts, but those doubts hardly outweighed her trust in Nell. When it came to otherworldly bullshit, Nell knew a great deal more than she did, anyway. And yes, it was also probably true that Nell’s desire to bring Hux back stemmed from selfish wants. Saving the world was just the cherry on top. But Lisa didn’t hold that against her one bit.

“You’re a good friend, Lisa.”

Lisa met Justine’s watchful gaze once more. Even in the darkness of the backseat, her expression was warm. Lisa felt it, Justine’s warmth, and oddly it made her even less comfortable—a kind of pressure or expectation to which she wasn’t accustomed. She said nothing in reply.

“Nell tells me you’re the coolest person she knows.
